Audi A6 Typ 4G: Safety Precautions

High Voltage Vehicles Safety Precautions

General Safety Precautions for the High Voltage System

  Note

Check with the importer is there are any questions regarding the titles "high voltage technician", "high voltage expert" or regarding the high voltage system before beginning any work on the high voltage system.

  DANGER!

Extremely dangerous due to high voltage.

  • The high voltage system is under high voltage. Electrocution can cause death or very serious personal injury.
  • Individuals with electronic/medical life- and health sustaining machines in or on their person cannot perform any work on high voltage systems. Life- and health sustaining machines are for example pain killer pumps, implanted defibrillators, pacemakers, insulin pumps, and hearing aids.
  • Have the high voltage system de-energized by a qualified person.

  DANGER!

The engine could start unexpectedly.

  • On electric - hybrid vehicles an active ready mode is difficult to identify. Parts of the body can be clamped or pulled.
  • Turn off the ignition.
  • Place the ignition key outside of the vehicle interior.

  DANGER!

Handling the high voltage cables

  • Never support on the high voltage cables and high voltage connectors. --> This may damage the insulation.
  • Do not lay tools on the high voltage cables and high voltage connectors.-> This may damage the insulation.
  • Do not sharply bend or kink the high voltage cables. --> This may damage the insulation.
  • When connecting pay attention to the coding of the high voltage connectors.

Safety Precautions for the High Voltage System, when the Voltage must be De-Energized

Before beginning work on the high voltage system, a high voltage technician must de-energize the high voltage system. Refer to → Electrical System Hybrid; Rep. Gr.93; High Voltage System, De-Energizing.

De-energizing the high voltage system is carried out exclusively via the "Guided Fault Finding" in the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester

For the procedures required for de-energizing the high voltage system.

  DANGER!

Hazardous high voltage

Electrocution can cause death or very serious personal injury.

  • The high voltage system may only be turned off by a qualified person (Audi high voltage technician) .
  • It must be certain that the voltage for the high voltage system is turned off. The voltage is guaranteed to be off exclusively with the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester via the "Guided fault finding".
  • The qualified technician (Audi high voltage technician) will make sure the voltage is turned off and that the system cannot turn back on again using a Service Disconnect Lock -T40262/1-. The qualified technician should make sure the system cannot turn on again by keeping the key and the Service Disconnect Lock -T40262/1- in a safe place.
  • The qualified personnel (Audi high voltage technicians) mark the vehicle with a label.

Safety Precautions when Restarting the High Voltage System

Restarting the high voltage system must be performed only by using "Guided Fault Finding" on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

  DANGER!

Hazardous high voltage

Severe bodily injury or death by electrocution

  • The high voltage system may only be restarted by a qualified person (Audi high voltage technician).
  • Use only the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in "Guided Fault Finding "to ensure the system has been re-energized.
  • Qualified personnel (Audi high voltage technician) restart the vehicle.
  • The qualified personnel (Audi high voltage technicians) mark the vehicle with a label.

Safety Precautions near High Voltage Components

  DANGER!

High voltage components have hazardous voltage.

  • The high voltage system is under high voltage. Electrocution can cause death or very serious personal injury from damages high voltage components and high voltage cables.
  • Do not use tools that are for cutting, deformed, or sharp edged.
  • Do not use sources of heat such as welding, soldering, hot air or thermal adhesive equipment.
  • Visually inspect the work area before working on high voltage components.
  • When working in the engine compartment, perform a visual inspection of the high voltage system maintenance connector, electric drive power and control electronics, the electro-drive drive motor, the A/C compressor, high voltage battery charger control module and the high voltage cables.
  • Perform a visual inspection of the High Voltage Heater (PTC), high voltage cables, the hybrid battery unit and the cover when working on the underbody.
  • Visually inspect all potential equalization cables.

Observe the following when performing the visual inspection:

  • None of the components appear to have any external damage.
  • The high voltage cable insulation and the potential equalization cable insulation are not damaged.
  • The high voltage cables must not have any unusual deformations.
  • Each high voltage component must be marked with a red warning label.

Safety Precautions for the High Voltage System, for Work During which the Ignition must be Switched On

  DANGER!

When working on vehicles with the ignition already switched on or that are ready to drive there is a danger of the engine starting unexpectedly and of being poisoned by gas in enclosed areas. Risk of body parts and/or clothing being clamped or pulled.

Perform the following before switching on the ignition:

  • Move the selector lever into P.
  • Activate the parking brake
  • Turn off the ignition.
  • Open the hood
  • Connect the charger, such as the Battery Charger -VAS 5095A- to the jump start point of the 12V vehicle electrical system.
  • Turn on the ignition.

Safety Precautions for the High Voltage System, for Work During which the Ignition must be not Switched On

  DANGER!

The engine could start unexpectedly.

  • On electric - hybrid vehicles an active ready mode is difficult to identify. Parts of the body can be clamped or pulled.
  • Turn off the ignition.
  • Place the ignition key outside of the vehicle interior.

Road Test with Testing Equipment Safety Precautions

If testing equipment must be used during a road test, observe the following:

  WARNING

Distraction and testing equipment that is not secured properly can cause accidents.

The passenger airbag could pose a risk if it deploys in a collision.

  • Operating testing equipment while driving is a distraction.
  • Testing equipment that is not secured probably increases the risk of injury.

Always secure testing equipment on the rear seat with a strap and have a second person on the rear seat operate them.
